District Judge Jean SchmidtTOPEKA—After 11 years serving on the bench of the Shawnee County District Court, Judge Jean M. Schmidt is retiring effective Sept. 25.

“I have enjoyed serving as judge in the 3rd Judicial District, but I look forward to an active retirement that includes travel, volunteering, and spending time with my husband, children and grandchildren,” Schmidt said.

Since her May 2003 appointment as district court judge by then-Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Schmidt has had primary assignments in domestic, criminal, and juvenile caseloads. She also has devoted time to training new judges, and providing continuing legal education and training in her areas of expertise to judges, judicial staff and lawyers.

Prior to her appointment as judge, Schmidt spent 22 years in public service, 18 of which were as a prosecutor.
