TOPEKA—Chief Judge Glenn Braun will retire January 13 after serving 12 1/2 years in the 23rd Judicial District.

The 23rd Judicial District is composed of Ellis, Gove, Rooks, and Trego counties. Braun was appointed as a district judge in 2012 and has served as chief judge since 2016.

Braun credits his father, a trial lawyer, for his desire to practice law.

“In sixth grade, my dad took me out of school to watch him try a first-degree murder trial from voir dire through the verdict,” Braun said. “From that point forward, I was hooked and not only wanted to be a trial lawyer but also a judge. Fortunately, I was blessed with both opportunities.”

Braun graduated from Kansas State University and Washburn University School of Law. He was in private practice from 1981 to 2012 and served as Ellis County attorney from 1989 to 1997. He also served on the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission from 2005 to 2012. He is a past president of the Kansas Bar Association.

Braun also credits his father for teaching him that every person working in the courthouse is important to the administration of justice. As a judge, he witnessed it firsthand.

“Court staff grappled with the uncertainty and difficulty of the pandemic, implementing a new case management system, and working through a cyberattack,” he said. “They adapted to keep our court system open and functioning efficiently. I am so proud to be associated with them and to have had the privilege to work with everyone in the Kansas judicial branch.”

Braun and his wife, Amy, are the parents of five children and have one grandchild.
